Abstract: |
Originally copyrighted in English in 1947 this survivor's memoir is stark like many of the early accounts written when the memories of the camp were fresh. Under the regime of Auschwitz interpersonal relations between the inmates are devoid of the veneer of civilization. The competition for food and other necessities puts people at odds. "You will crack too, like so many of us," they tell her. The author describes an elderly one-eyed inmate who offers her a half-gnawed potato that he cannot eat with his toothless gums. As she is eating another woman snatches the food from her mouth. The man kicks her to the ground. "She is younger than you," he says. |
